Want to Apply to the University of California? Do's and Don'ts

Getting Ready for the UCs? Here’s How to Stay on Track—Stress-Free!

Thinking about applying to the University of California (UC) system? It might seem like a big task, but don’t worry—you've got this! With a little planning and the right approach, you can navigate the process with confidence. Here’s a list of must-dos to help you stay on track and feel prepared without the stress.

Smart Strategies for a Strong Application

Check Your Honors Courses – Not all honors courses are UC-approved, which means they won’t get that extra GPA boost. If you're in a California high school, check your school’s UC A-G Course List to make sure your honors classes count. Some non-UC-approved honors courses might still be necessary for AP eligibility, so double-check with your counselor.

Balance Academics and Activities – UCs look for well-rounded students, so it’s all about quality over quantity. Keep up with your Honors/AP/IB courses, but also find extracurriculars you truly enjoy. Developing skills, taking on leadership roles, and engaging in meaningful activities will help make your application shine.

Look for Hands-On Experiences – Internships, job shadowing, and research opportunities can give you an edge. Let your family, friends, and teachers know you’re looking for ways to explore your interests—these experiences can help solidify your major choice or show that you're curious and proactive!

Consider Community College Courses – Taking UC-transferable courses (at least 3 semester or 4 quarter units) during the summers after freshman, sophomore, and junior years can boost your GPA and demonstrate your commitment to learning. Plus, they’re a great way to get a head start on college-level coursework!

Retake Any D or F Grades Before Senior Year – If you’ve had a tough semester, don’t stress. Just be sure to retake any required courses before senior year so your GPA reflects your best efforts. Whether you retake the same course or opt for an advanced version (like an AP/IB or community college course in the same subject), you’ll be back on track in no time.

Keep Your Parents in the Loop – While this is your college journey, having parents who stay informed and involved can be a big help. They can check in with counselors and teachers to make sure everything is on track, and they’ll be great support throughout the process.

Build Relationships with Your Teachers – Your teachers want to see you succeed! Take time to ask questions, seek advice, and show enthusiasm for their subject. A good rapport with your teachers can open the door to mentorship, academic support, and even a strong recommendation down the line.

What NOT to Worry About

Freshman Year Grades – While UCs will see the courses you took, your 9th-grade GPA is NOT factored into your UC admissions GPA. If freshman year wasn’t your best, don’t worry—focus on steady improvement in later years.

Senior Year GPA (After Admission) – The classes you take in senior year still matter, but as long as you maintain a solid B average with no failing grades, your acceptance won’t be affected. Just keep up the good work!

Progress Report Grades – Only your final semester grades appear on your transcript. If you see a low grade on a progress report, take it as a sign to adjust, but don’t panic—it won’t affect your UC application unless it becomes a final grade.

Your "Permanent Record" – Ever heard that something will “go on your permanent record”? Good news—UCs don’t review disciplinary records (unless it involves major academic dishonesty or legal issues). Stay out of trouble, but don’t stress over small mistakes.

Applying to UCs doesn’t have to be stressful. Take things one step at a time, stay organized, and focus on what matters most—your growth, interests, and future goals. You've got this!
